Tourist Eco-Retreat


Program Description: 
We invite a variety of groups, companies, friends, and universities to come visit Hoja Nueva to get to know the wildlife and culture found in the Peruvian Amazon. Tourist retreats are widely variable as we can cater to groups that want to take walks and experience the jungle for the first time, Universities that would like guided talks by professionals, or even charity groups that would like to spend their time giving back to the Hoja Nueva and Lucerna communities by working on sustainable agricultural plots.

Program Activities:
• Stay in our brand new eco-lodge designed by Hoja Nueva co-founders
• Learn about the sustainable technology featured in our designs
• Take guided walks in the jungle to see a variety of wildlife day and night
• Visit our farm (chakra) to learn about our sustainable agroforestry methods and how you can help
• Visit community farms to learn about cacao varieties, traditional growing techniques, and grafting
• Learn to harvest bananas, pineapple, yucca, cacao, and other tropical fruit species
• Make you own bar of chocolate with a family in Lucerna
• Make bracelets and local soaps with the community of Lucerna
• Play fútbol/soccer and participate in community outreach events on Sundays
• Pack raft the Piedras River and streams in Alpaca Rafts
• Guided talks in the evenings with staff members about various industry problems in Peru (i.e. gold mining, petroleum, illegal logging, castaña, bush meat hunting, and unsustainable agriculture) Focused placed on identifying solutions applicable in rural tropical communities.
• Additional talks on wildlife themes. Optional professionals brought in to teach lessons on mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, botany, mycology, and ecology
• For more adventurous groups, we can schedule work days at local farms (chakras) to help participate in increasing sustainability and consequently the livelihood of rural farmers

The Hoja Nueva Center of Collaboration was built 1km inland from the Piedras River. We are nestled next to an idyllic stream and only 300 meters from our 2 experimental cacao plots. We welcome volunteers, researchers, tourists, and interns to stay in spacious shared rooms each with a maximum capacity of 6 people per room. Larger, single rooms are offered at a higher price to those who prefer a more private living experience.*


Our Center has two common areas to relax in hammocks / on couches during the day, spaces that are ideal for reading and writing during off times. Amenities include 4 showers with changing rooms, sinks, and mirrors and two composting toilets reside a short minute walk away.

• Electricity each evening for cooking and charging devices (solar powered)
• No wifi or phone service at the Center or in nearby towns, just in Puerto

Included Services:
• Room in Puerto Maldonado, first day breakfast, lunch, and dinner
• Room and board at our newly constructed Center of Collaboration
• Transportation to and from our Center
• Three meals per days plus snacks and fruits
• 2-4 full time staff members
• First aid kit
• CPR/Wilderness First Aid/First Responder Trained staff
• Emergency Evacuation Procedures + Evac devices
• Venomous snake bite protocols

Services Not Included (Available Upon Request in Advance):
• Flights to/from Puerto Maldonado
• Private personal guide/field assistant
• Food and activities whilst in Puerto Maldonado
• Professional chef service
• Tourists will not be asked to make meals, but meals are not always prepared by professional chefs
• Visits to other tourist lodges/destinations



Single tourist public room: $900 / week
Single tourist private room: $1,100 / week
5+ person group rate per person: $800 / week
