Independent Research

Program Description:Independent Research
In addition to our regular intern and volunteer programs, Hoja Nueva invites recognized professionals, masters, and PhD or post-doctoral students to frame research projects and collect data on our land that helps build our evolving knowledge base. Dependent upon interest and the collective impact of proposed projects, the time of stay is completely flexible and we offer a daily rate. Researchers are not required to participate in daily work tasks or community work days, but we ask that they add their findings to our rapidly expanding research database to help further our mission! Our administrative and field staff have a wide range of specialties ranging from anthropology and community outreach, to agroforestry, wildlife, tropical biology, ecology, mycology, and conservation. We offer guidance and advice, as well as assistance in the field, and can also locate other professionals if outside expertise is requested in advance.

The Hoja Nueva Center of Collaboration was built 1km inland from the Piedras River. We are nestled next to an idyllic stream and only 300 meters from our 2 experimental cacao plots. We welcome volunteers, researchers, tourists, and interns to stay in spacious shared rooms each with a maximum capacity of 6 people per room. Larger, single rooms are offered at a higher price to those who prefer a more private living experience.* Our Center has two common areas to relax and lounge in hammocks and on couches during the day, spaces that are ideal for reading and writing during off times. Amenities include 4 showers with changing rooms, sinks, and mirrors and two composting toilets reside a short minute-long walk from the showers.
