Hamish Billingsley

Research and Intern Coordinator

Brief info

Hamish is a forest ecologist with a BSc in International Wildlife Biology from the University of South Wales (UK). Raised in a family of ecologists and naturalists, he’s been immersed in a love for the natural world from an early age. After several years in ecological consultancy, Hamish discovered his passion for field-based research during a field season in South Africa, which set him on the path toward a career in tropical ecology.

In 2023, during a trip to Belize, he developed a fascination with tropical forests. Following graduation, he travelled to the Amazon, where through a close friend he learned of Hoja Nueva and began an internship in early 2025. Since then, he has grown into the role of Research & Intern Coordinator, jointly with Alonzo.

In this role, Hamish helps oversee and schedule weekly research activities and station operations. He leads guided forest hikes, mentors interns at the rescue center, maintains trail networks, and supports the design and execution of research projects—both new and ongoing. His hands-on approach helps ensure that interns gain valuable field experience while contributing meaningfully to Hoja Nueva’s mission.
