Mission

Hoja Nueva is a science-driven conservation organization working to protect the biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon. Based in the Las Piedras region of Madre de Dios, we combine habitat protection, wildlife rescue and rewilding, ecological research, and conservation education to address both the immediate and long-term threats facing Amazonian wildlife and ecosystems.

We directly protect more than 3,000 hectares of primary rainforest while working with partners across a conservation corridor of more than 100,000 hectares in the Las Piedras watershed.Through our wildlife rescue and rehabilitation program, we respond to wildlife trafficking, human-wildlife conflict, and other anthropogenic threats, with an emphasis on rehabilitation and return to the wild whenever possible. Our research program conducts long-term and applied ecological research designed to improve our understanding of Amazonian species, ecosystems, and the pressures affecting them.

Our approach recognizes that lasting conservation requires more than protecting individual animals or parcels of forest. We work to address both the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss by integrating scientific research, direct wildlife intervention, habitat protection, environmental education, community engagement, and collaboration with government agencies, researchers, and other conservation organizations.

Our long-term goal is to help build a model of evidence-based conservation in the Las Piedras watershed—one that protects threatened wildlife and intact forest today while generating the knowledge, partnerships, and local capacity needed to conserve them far into the future.

Hoja Nueva operates through its Peruvian nonprofit organization, with its field station, research programs, and wildlife rehabilitation facilities located in Madre de Dios, Peru.
