Victor Alonso Huyhua Cornejo
Research and Intern Coordinator
Brief info
Alonso Huyhua is a Peruvian biologist from Ricardo Palma University (Lima) with extensive experience in wildlife conservation across Latin America. At Hoja Nueva, he serves as a Research and Intern Coordinator, supporting ecological projects, guiding students and visiting researchers in the field, and advancing conservation science in the Peruvian Amazon.
His current work focuses on tracking rehabilitated carnivores released from Hoja Nueva’s Khan Rewilding Center and using camera traps to study wild populations of felids and other carnivores in the Las Piedras region. This research plays a vital role in understanding species recovery and strengthening reintroduction efforts.
Before joining Hoja Nueva, Alonso worked in wildlife rescue centers in Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Costa Rica, where he specialized in the care and rehabilitation of primates, felids, birds, and manatees. He also served as a wildlife manager and naturalist guide in Costa Rica, overseeing enrichment programs, ethological monitoring, and environmental education. His earlier research experience includes marine bird and mammal ecology with the Punta San Juan Program and environmental outreach with Planeta Océano.
Dedicated to both field science and mentorship, Alonso brings a rare combination of research expertise and hands-on animal care to Hoja Nueva’s mission of protecting Amazonian wildlife and returning threatened species to the wild.
