Operation Zoo Rescue
Help us rescue the remaining animals from the last center of wildlife trafficking and abuse in Puerto Maldonado!
With your help, we were able to complete the first phase of closing the wildlife trafficking center in our region before the end of 2023. We were able to rescue over half of the animals in a single operation, relocating them to our center where they will receive the necessary medical care and rehabilitation before release. Now we are moving into the final phase of this massive operation to rescue the remaining animals and fully close the zoo before the end of January. We have two generous donors who will match all donations up to 7.5K, providing a total 15K to finish this incredible yet challenging operation.
During the first phase of the operation, we found that the zoo had illegally acquired more animals that we need to rescue, which means increased costs for creating more rehabilitation infrastructure, specialized transport for the larger animals, and medical costs.
Many of these animals are non-charismatic species such as caiman, snakes, and coatis, which makes it more difficult to fund the cost of their care even though they are just as deserving of a second chance at a wild life. Many of these animals are in poor health, are very large, and require specialized care in terms of rehabilitation.
We at Hoja Nueva are ready and able to provide them with the care that they need, and with your help we can make sure that these animals have the best future possible. Even more importantly, removing these remaining animals will allow the government to fully and permanently close the zoo which will ensure that no other animal is ever subjected to this treatment and will deal a major blow to trafficking of wildlife in the region.
The funds raised from this campaign will go directly towards building specialized infrastructure for the large reptiles, covering transport and medical costs for all of the remaining animals, and providing the logistics necessary to make this operation possible.
