Dr. Eva Chomba is Hoja Nueva’s Lead Veterinarian and provides veterinary leadership across its wildlife rehabilitation, rewilding, and domestic-animal programs. She brings decades of animal-health experience in Peru and works closely with Hoja Nueva’s rehabilitation staff to ensure that clinical care supports, rather than compromises, each animal’s welfare and long-term rehabilitation goals.

Eva oversees anesthesia and immobilization, comprehensive health examinations, diagnostics, blood collection and interpretation, parasite and infectious-disease screening, treatment planning, medical follow-up, and pre-release veterinary evaluations. She also prepares and reviews the veterinary documentation required for government-authorized wildlife management and release.

Her role is particularly important with large carnivores and medically complex cases, where veterinary intervention must be carefully balanced against stress, human exposure, and the behavioral goals of rehabilitation. Eva is part of the team developing health-screening and release-readiness procedures for Hoja Nueva’s proposed jaguar rewilding work.

She also supports Hoja Nueva’s One Health programs involving domestic dogs and cats, recognizing that wildlife health cannot be separated from the health of animals and communities surrounding protected forest.

By working closely with caretakers who observe animals every day, Eva helps connect clinical medicine with behavior, husbandry, nutrition, rehabilitation, and field conservation.
