Onesimo Jumanga
Wildlife & Operations Technician
Brief info
Onesimo Jumanga works across two essential sides of Hoja Nueva’s field operations: wildlife rehabilitation and maintenance. Originally from Junín and now connected to the local Las Piedras community, he has training in computing and information technology and is also pursuing studies in education.
At the Khan ReWilding Center, Onesimo contributes particularly to environmental enrichment and enclosure development. He helps build and modify structures, climbing opportunities, feeding challenges, shelters, substrates, and other features designed to encourage natural behaviors and make rehabilitation environments more biologically appropriate. He also supports daily husbandry, with particular involvement in the care and rehabilitation of peccaries.
When he is not working directly with animals, Onesimo shifts into construction and maintenance. His responsibilities include enclosure repairs, infrastructure improvements, moving materials, practical field logistics, and the constant maintenance required to keep an off-grid rainforest site operating safely.
That dual role is especially valuable at Hoja Nueva because good wildlife rehabilitation depends heavily on physical environments. Onesimo understands both the animals using an enclosure and the practical realities of building and maintaining it, allowing him to help bridge animal behavior, enrichment, husbandry, and construction.
